On Sunday November 9 at the White Tower in Thessaloniki Feeding the 5000, a global campaign to fight food waste, will provide a delicious free meal for 5000 people and invites you to be there! The meal will be prepared with fresh raw materials that would not be consumed either due to appearance or excess.
The event is organized by the environmental organization Feedback, Thessaloniki-European Youth Capital 2014 EAST SA, Anonymous Development Company OTA of Eastern Thessaloniki, BOROUME, WWF Greece, the British Council, Harokopion University, Slow Food Thrace and EU FUSIONS with the support of the Municipality of Thessaloniki.
Millions of tons of fresh fruit and vegetables are thrown away every year because they are not…presentable and more because they are surplus! More than 1/3 of the world's food production is wasted from fields and supermarkets to households and restaurants, while each household in Greece wastes 98.9 kg of food per person annually.
Me-Nou for 5000 will be an impressive celebration that will highlight positive and delicious solutions to the problem of food wasten, not only at the household level but also at the stages of food production, distribution and sale. As part of the Feeding the 5000 campaign, a series of similar events have been held with great success in cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, New York, Nairobi and Warsaw. The event in Thessaloniki is also part of EU FUSIONS, a four-year program against food waste in Europe.
From 11 am to 4 pm, a collaboration of organizations, hundreds of volunteers and branded supporters invites the public to enjoy the main meal – a giant bream – and engage in a range of imaginative side activities.
The meal will be prepared by Association of Chefs of Thessaloniki with main ingredients fresh vegetables and fruit that would be wasted, either because they were in excess or because of an "ugly" appearance, such as crooked carrots, ugly potatoes and courgettes with "character".
In fact, those who arrive at the White Tower will have the opportunity to watch live three renowned chefs, the Lefteris Lazarou (chef at Varoulko Seaside), Diane Kokhila and Eutychis Bletsa who will present imaginative proposals for utilizing leftover food as well as a series of culinary creations!
Also note that you can take part in Disco Soup, where together with other volunteers you will be able to make and enjoy a giant fruit salad, cleaning and cutting fruits and vegetables to the beat of DJ music. The day before the event another Disco Soup will be organized – a party where over 70 volunteers will prepare the vegetables for the main meal with dance music in the background.
